INSTAGRAM FILTERS

A large portion of my agency work was creating Instagram and Facebook filters. It uses a lot of logic that exists in game design, as well as using graphics or illustrative elements. They were all made using a program called Spark AR that has the capacity to encorporate node-based programming or JavaScript. My role was to engage with Facebook’s platform leadership and represent the company in global conferences such as India’s Spark AR Hackathon. As well as creating the filters, I was also responsible for QA testing and submitting them under Meta’s guidelines. Furthermore, I was in charge of creating promotional videos for them to be used on our social media platforms (Instagram, Linkedin, etc).

DUNE FILTER

Created for the release of the Dune movie. This filter used 3D modeling, particle effects (for the dust), background segmentation as well as makeup/face alteration (for the eyes). The spice must flow.

META OPEN ARTS X SPARK AR CREATORS FILTER

This filter was for the Open Arts project run by Meta in collaboration between 11 AR Creators, 7 visual artists and 13 cities. I based a target tracking filter on Natalia Nakazawa’s embroidery art piece that is influenced by immigration, travel, connection, and murmuration of birds and butterflies. I relied on high-res photos of the art piece to create target trackers, and used animation and 3D modelling to come up with ways to interpret the artwork in a 3D space.

LORO PIANA FILTER

Loro Piana approached us to make a filter featuring their mascots the “bumbas.” We received high res videos of the critters jumping and dancing and it was my job to prep these videos to be used as well as building the filter itself. All filters at this time needed to be under 4MB and the source file was much larger. To solve this, it involved trimming a portion of animation, importing into photoshop, resizing and making it formatted to the power of 2s, then exporting as a texture sequence. Once imported I used patches to make them bounce across the screen. Additionally, I created some spools of wool at the bottom in matching colours adhering to their brand guidelines, and used a static logo and promo tagline above.

NARS FILTER

Created in collaboration with NARS, this filter involved working closely with a client and using and prepping assets given to us. It also involved a lot of optimisation to make sure the filter did not go over the file limitation. It was also imperative that each lipstick matches the colour and finish (eg. Sheer, matte, glossy) etc.

SQUID GAME FILTER

Based on the hit Netflix tv series “Squid Game,” this filter features the iconic helmets and hoods worn by the staff members in the show. By tapping the screen you can alternate between different shapes. I also made it applicable for multiple faces within the viewfinder.

LINES OUT FILTER

A filter created as a result of R+D for Spark AR. A lot of clients request “cyberpunk” themed aesthetics, which I wanted to create without the use of importing graphics. This was created using only available patches within Spark AR and no outside programs. Using a sobel filter, and some animating and colour nodes, I made a filter that has a very neat outline effect that is off-centre slightly, as well as chromatic aberration.

RGB FILTER

This was another filter as a result of R+D. This is applying the same concept of chromatic aberration using only nodes within the program. A disorientating cyberpunk-esque effect was the desired result.

BEAUTY AND EYE FILTER

This filter was created to show off the retouching and eye-colour changing options possible within the program. I created different hues for the eye colour that can be switched via tapping the screen. I also made blush, eyeshadow, highlighter and lipstick applied as different textures that can all be individually altered without affected the other parts.

CHRISTMAS FILTER

Created for Facebooks Video Messager platform as well as Instagram and Facebook camera. This involves a toon shader on animated 3D models with skeletons that allow it to move based on the users movement. By tapping you can change the style of hat. Rosy cheeks were added as a makeup-texture to create that wintery festive look.

YEAR OF THE OX

Created for Year of the Ox, this filter features 3D modelling with rigging to make the ears move when triggered by a smile input. The same trigger activates the particle effect of coins falling from the sky.
